My 10 Favorite Christian Worship Songs
September 19, 2014
My favorite worship songs have a wide span of artists and songs. Worship songs always draw my attention away from me and my situations to put everything squarely on God. When I sing or listen to worship songs, I remember who God is, what He has done, and what He will do in my life. I can’t remain in a pity party frame of mind when I worship God. These songs constantly remind me of God’s worth in praise and song:
#1) Take Me to the King (Tamela Mann)
“God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see” (1 Timothy 6:15-16).
The lyrics express the reality of being worn out and tired in the faith. This worship song brings me to the throne room of God with nothing, but myself in the raw without any pretense of self-reliance. I’m brought to my knees to focus on God’s glory and lay everything at His feet.
#2) Praise You in this Storm (Casting Crowns)
“When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but the righteous stand firm forever” (Proverbs 10:25).
When I first heard this song, I resisted it—mainly because I didn’t want to accept that God would keep a storm going for a long period of time. Yet I acquiesced to the knowledge that God is with me especially in the storms of my life. I’ve learned to praise the Lord even in the midst of great difficulty to know Him with a deeper spiritual awareness.
#3) I Look To You (Whitney Houston)
“For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you” (2 Chronicles 20:12).
There are many times in the faith when I haven’t the faintest idea of what to do. The intensity of the trial keeps me from knowing the right way to go. It is in those times that I look to the Lord—the God in heaven—to provide direction, clarity, and peace so that I can move forward against the winds of adversity.
#4) Trust in God (The Winans)
“In God I trust and am not afraid. What can man do to me?” (Psalm 56:11).
Trusting God is easier when everything seems to fall in place, but what to do when everything seems to fall apart? This is when my faith is tested and I must trust in God when there’s nothing to hold on to. God is worthy of my trust even when I don’t understand how everything is going to work out.
#5) Jesus Is Love (The Commodores)
“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters” (1 John 3:16).
This simple melody always tugs at my heart as I often must pull back out of the craziness of life and remember that Jesus is love. I can get caught up in the religious duties and lose the preciousness of the love in Christ for me. His love enables me to love the unlovely and show that love in a tangible way.
#6) My Soul Is Anchored (Douglas Miller)
“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf” (Hebrews 6:19-20).
The greater the intensity of the storm—the greater the test to my faith, I’ve had to learn to set down the anchor of faith and hope to make it through the day. God is greater than my storm and through the Holy Spirit, He gives me the strength I need to survive it. The anchor of my soul is the belief that Christ is with me no matter the height of adversities nor the depths of despair.
#7) We Will Remember (Tommy Walker)
“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds” (Psalm 77:11-12).
When I’m tempted to feel sorry for myself or struggle with my faith in God, I often make myself stop and remember God’s faithfulness throughout my entire life. He remains faithful even when I’ve been faithless. Remembering gives me the hope that He will once again step in and provide everything I need in His timing.
#8) It Is Well With My Soul (Chris Rice)
“May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 5:23).
The inner peace of God is an incredible gift that sustains me through the hard days. His peace that protects my heart and mind gives me to move forward when I desire to stay in a slump of surrender. It’s a mystery how I and other believers can have peace in spite of the taunts and threats from the enemy.
#9) My Tribute (Andre Crouch)
“You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being” (Revelation 4:11).
If there’s anything good that I’ve done in my life—it’s because of the Lord. His glory not only is revealed in the beauty of nature, but more importantly, in the lives of those who follow after Him with their whole hearts. God is worthy of all the glory because of the great things He has done within and around me.
#10) Lord, I Need You (Matt Maher)
“For in him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).
Sometimes I get off track and begin seeking after things I think I need, but in reality I need Christ Jesus as a part of my life daily. If all I had was the Lord, it would be enough to sustain my spirit, mind, and body. Needing the Lord keeps me humble to the fact that I’m not living for myself, but rather for Him.
Worship Daily…
Our every need and desires takes second place to worshipping God. Every day we need to have an awareness of how we worship God in our lives—making Him the focus of our desires. Worship is just letting God know how much He is worth being in our lives. Start right now to worship God in His splendor and majesty.
