7 Ways To Give Control of Your Situation to God Today
March 02, 2015

Many of us struggle with releasing control to God because we are taught early in life that we must plan and work hard. Yet all the planning in the world doesn’t insulate us from the unexpected trials and temptations of life. We must have a balanced approach to dealing with hard situations—not too rigidly in control and not too complacent or apathetic. What are 7 ways you can give control of your situations to God today?
#1) Release your situation to God in prayer.
“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken” (Psalm 55:22).
It’s amazing how many of us will jump to fix a situation without praying first. We must release our situations to God in prayer and trust. When we accept our dependency on God, He takes our desperation and changes it to hope. We learn to find patience in His presence when we submit ourselves in prayer and fasting before God.
#2) Repent of any actions to control the situation without God.
“Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings” (Proverbs 1:23).
Some of us struggle with releasing control because we know we messed up and we are trying to fix it. However, unless we come to a place of repentance—we will only make the situation worse. The Lord provides an abundance of wisdom for those who repent and seek after His direction. We must take the time to confess and turn away from our self-will to depend on God.
#3) Refuse to allow satanic thoughts to penetrate your mind.
“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:4).
No matter the situation, Satan will always send negative and destructive thoughts in our minds. We must discipline ourselves to recognize his schemes and speak the word of God to ourselves, our family, and friends. The devil’s power is limited and he can’t be in the presence of God’s word for long. Don’t be afraid to use God’s word to sustain your faith and hope in His control of your life.
#4) Receive help from those who God sends your way.
“All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble’” (1 Peter 5:5).
When we think we are in control of a situation, it reveals the pride that is within us. Yet when we humble ourselves to seek help in intercessory prayer or gifts, it changes us. Our vulnerability results in glory to God and the opportunity for others to grow in their faith as they give to us. However, we must be willing to receive the help that God sends our way.
#5) Read and meditate on God’s word every day.
“The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy” (Psalm 111:7).
In the busyness of life’s responsibilities, we can forget how important and necessary God’s word is for us and our families. When we read and meditate on His word, we remember that He will take care of us and make all things work together for our good. His word gives us peace about releasing control and trusting Him more.
#6) Renew your commitment to live out this difficult journey in Christ’s name.
“But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back” (Hebrews 10:38).
Our measure of faith in God is revealed by our actions. We must come back to the place of our commitment to God whether we feel everything in our life is manageable or completely chaotic. Our lives are for His glory and not ours. By renewing our lives to Christ, we release Him to do what He pleases in His timing.
#7) Remember that God is the One in control.
“Do you know how God controls the clouds and makes his lightning flash?” (Job 37:15).
Before Satan struck Job, he seemed to have it all under control—he took care of his family and was a respected leader in his community. Yet when it was all taken from him, he had to come to the realization that God was in control even in the midst of great tragedies. The Lord is still turning what the devil means for evil—into good things. We must step back and comprehend the greatness, wonder, and power of the mighty God we serve.
Who is in Control?
As long as we believe that we are in control of our lives, we will fall short of the glory of God. He desires that we use our gifts to the fullest without forgetting from whom we receive the strength to do it. God wants His children to trust in Him and that trust is built up as we release control of our situations to His great hands.
