Sometimes, the biggest catch isn’t measured by the size of the fish but by the depth of the rescue–a moment when skill and courage came through a fishing line to save a life. A fisherman's hook saves a woman who was caught in a riptide.
Mossel Bay, South Africa, Diaz Beach holds its raw, perilous beauty for others to enjoy. It’s the kind of coastline known for its strong currents and great fishing. It’s also known to be a spot that swimmers shouldn’t use. But just past midnight, a woman was spotted in the water when a fisherman finally noticed her.

He ran to the water and cast his line, hoping to throw her a lifeline. He made several attempts, and the situation grew more tragic by the minute. He was losing hope of saving the woman when his one last attempt hooked her jeans!
Can you picture it? A small fishing hook, roughly the size of a pinky finger, became the bridge between life and loss. It’s no wonder the hook found her clothes instead of her skin. The odds were staggeringly slim, but one man's determination made all the difference.
“The fisherman was able to reel her in towards the beach where once she reached waist-deep water, a local fisherman waded into the water and helped her out the water onto the beach as NSRI and emergency services were arriving on the scene,” he said. “The local fisherman is commended for his effort that contributed to saving the lady’s life.”
I can’t help but think of God during this incredible rescue. Sometimes, we’re caught in life’s currents that threaten to pull us under. And then God casts us a lifeline–a friend, words of encouragement, or an expected act of kindness. Like that fisherman, He reels us to His love.
