For one lucky Kentucky nurse, a winning scratch-off lottery ticket was just the sign she needed to feel better about retiring from the career she loved! 

Signs and signals appear to us in all manner of ways. Perhaps, it is the sighting of a cardinal just outside one’s kitchen window. Maybe, it is the rainbow that colors the sky after a random shower.

It may even be the blessing of a winning lottery ticket that offers the reassurance needed. That is the very thing that provided the affirmation a Kentucky woman needed after making the decision to leave her 36-year nursing career! 

Nurse Retires Then Buys Winning Scratch-Off Lottery Ticket

Finding the right time to retire and leave behind the security of a regular paycheck, along with the profession that has been so much a part of one’s life is often a really tough call. And, the pandemic has most assuredly impacted that decision for those working in healthcare. The New York Times reported that in Kentucky alone, there have been 762,429 cases and 10,218 COVID-related deaths as of the publication date of that article.

So, when this newly-retired woman purchased a winning scratch-off at Double Kwik in Prestonsburg, she felt immediate relief. "It was unbelievable. I saw this as a sign it was meant to be for me to quit working." 

She hadn’t even left the convenience store before checking out her ticket. The nurse won with the number 20. And her prize netted her $142,000 after taxes, which she picked up at the lottery headquarters in Louisville just a few days later.

It’s great to see someone who has given so much of their life to their community and calling, particularly when that calling has been so challenging at times along the way.
