Powerful Moment Weatherman Prays On-Air As Deadly Tornado Rips Through Mississippi

Weatherman Matt Laubhan prays on air as he reports the path of a deadly tornado in Mississippi. He knew the people in the path of the storm needed help and turned to the ultimate source of protection -- Jesus!

As a “strong life-threatening tornado” swept across the state of Mississippi, meteorologist Matt Laubhan of WTVA-TV in Tupelo provided updates to viewers.

Keeping an eye on radar images, Matt revealed the path of the tornado was headed straight for the town of Amory. And what he saw chilled him to the bone.

The radar projections predicted the tornado passing over a highway and bridge in the small town of Amory. And while Matt couldn't guarantee exactly how close the cyclone would come to the town, he knew it put the residents at serious risk.

His concern for the people of Amory was evident. But as new radar scans came in showing the worst-case scenario, the weatherman prays on air for those in its path. In addition to taking shelter, these folks were going to need divine intervention to help keep them safe.

“Dear Jesus, please help them. Amen,” he said.

Matt knew the viewers were no strangers to tornadoes. They've been battered before. And realizing the terror they must be feeling at the news left him overwhelmed.

"I just found myself not knowing what to say, and so you see me sigh and then it just kind of comes out," he explained. "I can't say I've ever intended to pray on the air, but sometimes you need a higher power to help you out."

According to local police, Amory saw injuries as a result of the storm and plenty of damage. But no deaths. Tragically, however, the tornado killed 25 elsewhere in Mississippi.

Moments like these are harsh reminders of just how little control we really have. And just as Matt demonstrated when the weatherman prayed on air, we must surrender the outcomes in our lives to Jesus and turn to Him as our source of comfort and protection.

A Prayer for Unity in the Church This Christmas - Your Daily Prayer - December 22

It’s easy to take offense when someone hurts you, or you’re frustrated with where you are in life, and it seems as though everyone around you is thriving. But, when we take an honest look at ourselves and see how God loves us (1 Corinthians 13), we realize we have no right to hold any grudges against our brothers and sisters.
