Top 10 Christian Songs From Christian Movies

Throughout the history of the movie industry there have been few things that have inspired moviegoers (aside from the picture itself) as the movie’s soundtrack. While there are so many sweeping scores to great films Christian movies have found a wonderful outlet for Christian music through soundtracks that feature songs that retell the message of the movie in some way. The following list is far from exhaustive and to keep peace on which song is actually the best I just put them in alphabetical order. Enjoy…

 # 1  Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) – Chris Tomlin

The movie “Amazing Grace” chronicles William Wilberforce’s great efforts to abolish slavery in England. The movie inspires us to work for the greater good of mankind while being centered in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Wilberforce was encouraged and mentored by John Newton, the salve trader turned hymn writer who penned this classic anthem of Christianity. Chris Tomlin’s version of this song adds the beautiful truth that we are set free from the chains of our sin in God’s Amazing Grace.

 # 2  Courageous – Casting Crowns – Courageous

If you’ve never cried at a movie I dare you to watch “Courageous” and keep your eyes dry. This film depicts the importance of being a godly father and standing up for our families and children. This song by Casting Crowns encourages men to step up and be the men of God they were called to be. To be courageous men who stand for their families by seeking after God.

# 3  Cry Out to Jesus – Third Day – The Grace Card

I cannot think of one thing more important to the life of a believer than the grace of God in Jesus Christ. “The Grace Card” shows the grace of God restoring lives and relationships. There are many times in our lives where we need the grace of God in our lives and there is no other way to access that than to Cry out to Jesus for the rest and peace we can only find in Him.

 # 4  Firework – Chris Sligh – Soul Surfer

“Soul Surfer” shows us the reality of Romans 8:28 where we see God using something unimaginable, a young girl losing her arm in a shark attack, for the good of that person and family. Bethany Hamilton rose from tragedy and God shot her off like a firework and used her story to bring Himself glory and her surfing championships. The song “Firework” originally released by Katy Perry was redone for the movie by Chris Sligh and helps show how God can take someone who thinks they have no future and make them shine in the sky through His power.

 # 5  How To Save a Life – The Fray – To Save a Life

With Bullying becoming an issue on a national level the problem and solution is depicted in the film “How to Save a Life”. The song of the same name by the Fray illustrates the importance of just listening to others and taking the time out of our lives to love others and share the love of Jesus with them. We will never know the difference we can make in other people’s lives by just loving them, until we do it.

 # 6  I See Love – Third Day, Steven Curtis Chapman – The Passion of the Christ

There have been few movies in the history of cinema that show the love of God and what Jesus went through on our behalf as clearly as Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ”. Third Day and Steven Curtis Chapmen penned this beautiful song “I See Love” that talks about Jesus, who He is, the life He lived, the sacrifice He made and in all of that we are able to see the love of God in Jesus Christ sent for us.

# 7  Live Like That – Sidewalk Prophets – The Bible Mini-Series

News has been made lately from “The Bible” mini-series which has shown us that interest in God’s Word is still alive and well in the world. This song by Sidewalk Prophets shares a desire to live an authentic life in Jesus Christ that brings Him glory and honor as we seek to live and obey His Word. A very appropriate songs for our lives and this film.

# 8  Life is Beautiful – The Afters - October Baby

There is no doubt that God has given us life and the life He has given us He intends to be beautiful. “October Baby” helps us to understand the beauty of life and The Afters allow us a musical glimpse into that truth through this song.

# 9 This is Home – Switchfoot – The Chronicles of Narnia Prince Caspian

Talking animals, epic battles are only the fun CGI effects of the Narnia series. The theme behind the movies is so often that God has a place, plan and purpose for each of us just like the characters in each of the films. Switchfoot’s song “This is Home” talks about finding the place where we belong in God’s world and plan for us and helps drive the theme of the films into our hearts and minds.

# 10 While I’m Waiting – John Waller - Fireproof

Many of us have experienced times in our lives where we were doing everything we could to follow the will of God in our lives and yet things don’t seem to be going the right way. This song is dedicated to that idea as shown in the movie “Fireproof”. A husband hoping to win his wife back to him after becoming a Christian must wait on the Lord and trust that God is working even when it doesn’t seem so. We can take encouragement in this that God is working while we wait on Him and that He never calls us to stand still but to continue serving Him and running our race while we wait.

If you haven’t seen all of these films I would highly encourage you to do so and then consider the lyrics from each of these songs in the context of the film and let God speak to you through the messages of each of these works of art.
