Teenager Who Finds Money at Restaurant, Doesn't Think Twice About Returning it to Owner

A teenager who finds money at a restaurant doesn’t think twice about returning it to its rightful owner. In the quiet corners of life, when moments of decision arrive, the grace of doing what is right can shine brightly. Nate Affourtit, just 18 years old, stood at the crossroads of such a moment when an envelope filled with cash was left behind at the O’Charley’s restaurant where he worked. And when the decision to return it was made, it wasn’t out of obligation or expectation—it was simply because that’s what he knew was right.

How might you ask? Money is free when it’s found, correct? Not so! Not for Nate and his customers. Lola, a mother who was dining with her daughter and husband and had just paid the bill and left the restaurant when she unknowingly left behind an envelope filled with cash.

When she realized it was gone, panic swept through her. “That day, I wasn’t having the best day at work, and he was a light,” Lola recalled, a clear reminder that our minds become clouded in the rush of life. But when she called the restaurant, she learned the money had been found–and returned–by a teenage boy.

“I didn’t think about stealing it,” Nate said simply, as though doing the right thing is the most natural response in the world. As Nate beautifully puts it, “I give thanks to my mom and my dad for teaching me right.”

His words carry the weight of values his parents instilled in him, who have taught him to do right, even when no one is watching. May we all carry that same quiet courage, that same unwavering conviction, in the small moments where our choices can reflect God’s light of what is good and true.

The Teenager Did the Right Thing When He Found the Money

God's call to do the right thing is ever-present, urging us toward love and integrity. And when we respond, we find that His way is always the better way, leading us to places where His goodness shines brightest. Thank you, Nate, for shining your light for all of us to see!
