Kris Robinson is the Interim Shelter Director at the Senatobia-Tate County Animal Shelter. Recently, she met a 17-year-old who came in with his dog, Jada.
“I was just sitting up here in the office and had just finished some cleaning, and saw a young man walking across the field with what looked like a dog in tow,” Kris shared. “He came in and he asked if he could leave his dog here. And I said, ‘Buddy, we are so full.’ And he said, ‘Well, I can’t take care of her anymore.’ He said, ‘I live under a bridge.’ And it broke my heart.”
That’s when Kris knew she had to make room at the shelter for Jada, a sweet Rottweiler/German Shepherd puppy. The teen shared with Kris how he had to leave Jada in his tent when he went out looking for work. But she had managed to escape. Then the teen revealed that he doesn’t even have a tent anymore and was not able to feed his dog.
“So he asked if we could take her and I said, ‘Of course,'” Kris said. “For this young man to just be 17 and down on his luck. And no matter what problems he’s facing, he still took the time to walk her over her and make sure somebody was going to take care of her. I think that says a lot about his character.”
When the teen surrendered Jada to the shelter, he left a bag of dog food behind for her. The devotion to his dog had Kris holding back tears.
But this story does have a happy ending! After posting about Jada on the shelter’s Facebook page, Kris said that people near and far have reached out wanted to help the dog and the 17-year-old.
“We’re a shelter, so we’re concerned about the dog, but ultimately we were concerned about him and him getting off the street and getting some help,” said Kris.
With the information that the teen left about himself at the shelter, he was able to safely be located and was given a home to stay in. A family from First United Methodist Church in Senatobia took the 17-year-old in. And he was able to be reunited with Jada!
“He’s able to go to someone’s house and be with them for awhile while he gets his life back on track,” said Kris.
The church’s phone number is 662-562-5214 where people can call if they are interested in donating to the family who took in Jada and his teenage owner.
