Christian radio stations for years have been playing gospel centered songs with different themes. A popular theme that comes up are songs about blessings. According to dictionary.com a “blessing ”is “a favor or gift bestowed by God, thereby bringing happiness.” However, among Christians we know that sometimes God blesses by giving and taking away from us, which seems paradoxical but will ultimately bring joy–which trumps happiness any day.
Favorite Lyric: “Be blessed with supernatural strength to turn your eyes from foolish, worthless, and evil things, and to shut out the demeaning and the negative.”
We are blessed when we avoid sinful habits and follow God. By the gift of the Holy Spirit we assurance that we are given supernatural strength to walk away from sin when tempted and follow Christ.
Favorite Lyric: “Blessed are those who dwell in Your house. They are ever praising You.”
It is such a blessing to be a part of a church family where you can enter and be genuine with other believers. We are blessed to be able to dwell in the house of the Lord.
Scripture: “Blessed are those who dwell in your house, ever singing your praise! Selah. Blessed are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion.”(Psalm 84:4-5 ESV)
Favorite Lyric: “When the hands of time wind fully down. And the earth is rolled up like a scroll, The trumpets will call and the world will fall to its knees as we go home.”
Scripture: “for it is written, ‘As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.’”(Romans 14:11 ESV)
Favorite Lyric: “Blessing and honor, Glory and power unto the Lord be praised. Sing with a chorus resounding before us Holy is his name, his name.”
God does give us many blessings and although He does not necessarily need anything from us we should be bestowing blessings and honor upon Him as one day we will sing with the creatures of heaven.
Scripture: “And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying,‘To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!’”(Revelation 5:13 ESV)
Favorite Lyric: “We are loved when we feel all is lost. When the shadows are cast on the cross
Only then can we know the embrace of the one. Who’s carried us along”
When we finally cast our burdens unto Jesus, we will finally understand the blessings He has given by dying on the cross for our sins.
Scripture: “In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”(1 John 4:10 ESV)
Favorite Lyric: “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name!”
Scripture: “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!”(Psalm 103:1 ESV)
Favorite Lyric: “Count your blessings, name them one by one. Count your blessings, see what God hath done!”
When we count and name our blessings one by one we have a visible representation of all the blessings that God has given us. Set aside some time this week to meditate on the blessings that God has provided you and write them out. By doing so I know God will be glorifies and you will be humbled in His name.
Favorite Lyric: “You're rich in love, and You're slow to anger. Your name is great, and Your heart is kind. For all Your goodness I will keep on singing, Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find.”
Thankfully our God is“slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love”. Without his steadfast love our lives would be much more difficult to endure. Praise God for His everlasting love!
Scripture: “The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.”(Psalm 103:8 ESV)
Favorite Lyric: “Shall I take from Your hand Your blessings. Yet not welcome any pain? Shall I thank You for days of sunshine, yet grumble in days of rain? Shall I love You in times of plenty
Then leave You in days of drought? Shall I trust when I reap a harvest, but when winter winds blow, then doubt?”
It’s important to realize that God is faithful to bless through delightful times of our lives and those that hurt. In our pain we must hold on to Him and follow His ways.
Scripture: “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”(Psalm 18:2 (ESV)
Favorite Lyric: “Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him all creatures here below
Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts. Praise Father Son and Holy Ghost.”
God is the one whom deserves praise for our blessings. When we praise Him we give Him the glory due His name.
Favorite Lyric: “Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; here's my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.”
I am prone to wander away from the straight and narrow, but I know God is faithful to find me in my lost, lonely and rebellious moments.
A Parable of Jesus: “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it?”(Luke 15:4 ESV)
Favorite Lyric: “You give and take away. You give and take away. My heart will choose to say. Lord, blessed be Your name.”
It’s “easy”to choose following The Lord when we are being given so much, salvation, new life, peace, and security. However, it is really difficult to trust when we are being burdened by hate, hurt, and trials. We must be prepared to praise and bless God when he both blesses us and when he blesses by removing something or someone from our life.
Scripture: “I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”(Psalm 34:1 ESV)
There are many Christian songs about blessing, these are just a few of my favorites. I hope you have been encouraged by this list. Post in the comment section any songs that you really enjoy about blessing.
