Costco Worker Failed to Show up at Work, Then Coworkers Came Together and Saved His Life

When a Costco worker failed to show up for work, store employees took actions that ultimately saved the employee’s life. However, things could have gone quite differently.

When a Mayfield Heights, Ohio, Costco store associate didn’t show up at work for his 5:00 a.m. shift, co-workers and management might have just assumed the employee was skipping or had overslept. They might have felt frustrated and simply went on about the business of the day without investigating.

However, Costco Manager Jesse Orsborn didn’t do that; instead, he made a phone call to check on the tardy employee.

Jesse called the employee and became concerned when he heard the Costco worker on the other end of the line. The man’s speech was unclear, and Jesse knew something must be wrong. Unfortunately, the phone connection failed.

Jesse explained Costco protocol, “In situations where someone might oversleep for the early shift, we usually give them a friendly wake-up call, checking if they're on their way. However, this routine check-in took an unexpected turn.”

Concern For Employee Who Didn't Show Up At Work

After being alerted about the strange call, the store’s Assistant General Manager, Dave Mackin, and others began trying to reach their colleague.

“We started calling several times, and each time, it became more apparent that something was seriously wrong. There was mumbling and groaning, and it was evident that he was experiencing a medical emergency,” stated Mr. Mackin

It soon became clear that their co-worker was having a stroke! While a few employees stayed on the phone with the man, others quickly contacted emergency support. Before long, medical help was on the scene, and the man was rushed to the hospital. Thankfully, he was later released, but he faces a lengthy recovery ahead.

If not for the thoughtfulness of Jesse Orsborn and the quick thinking of Dave Mackin and other employees, their fellow employee might not be alive today. Manager Mackin commented on the sense of community within the Cleveland area store, sharing, “We take care of our members. We take care of our employees. They mean the world to us.”
