It has been five years since we turned on the news to learn about the tragedy that is the Sand Hook Elementary School shooting. On that fateful day , December 14, 2012, 20-year-old Adam Lanza drove to the local Elementary School and shot and killed 20 children and six teachers and staff.

It was a tragedy that truly made the country stop in horror. And for many there seemed to be no hope left in the world. But the families of the victims refused to face hate with hate. Instead they rallied together to spread hope. They even set up the Sandy Hook Promise, an organization that works to educate students and teachers to see the signs of potential gun violence and to know how to step in.

And this year with the fifth anniversary of Sandy Hook approaching singer songwriter Sheryl Crow wrote a special song to mark the anniversary and bring awareness to the great work Sandy Hook Promise is doing to end tragedies like this one.

Here is what Sheryl Crow has to say about the non-profit. “In just 3 years, Sandy Hook Promise has trained over 2.5 million youth and adults across all 50 states with its evidenced-based Know The Signs gun violence prevention programs. The four programs – which include Start With Hello, Say Something, Signs of Suicide and Safety Assessment & Intervention - are offered free to schools and youth organizations across the country. These programs have helped stop multiple school shootings, suicides and other acts of violence, as well as reduced incidences of bullying and helped many young people get the mental health services they need. Every $1 you donate helps Sandy Hook Promise train one student or adult how to Know The Signs of individuals at-risk of hurting themselves or others and take action to get help. By training two-generations of Americans, we are creating a culture engaged in preventing gun violence, resulting in saving more lives and keeping our schools and communities safe, nationwide.“

The song is called ‘the Dreaming Kind’ and it shares a message of faith, that maybe we are still beautiful on the inside. Listen to these powerful lyrics “I'm giving it all I got; there'll be no more wasting precious time; giving it all I got; and nothing's ever going to change my mind; that we’re beautiful inside; maybe I’m the dreaming kind"

This is such an important message for our world right now. And something about Sheryl Crow singing this beautiful song with her niece Ava makes it all the more poignant.
