Grumpy Grey Seal Takes Over Hotel Room in the Netherlands, To Take a Nap

We may sometimes worry about security at the hotels and resorts in which we stay on vacation, but rarely does one expect their hotel room to be taken over by a seal! Oddly, a traveler had that very thing happen during their stay at the Pier 7 beachside hotel in Vlissengen, Netherlands!

The Zeeland Animal Welfare Foundation shared in a February Facebook post that when a guest at Pier 7 returned to their room, they observed a cute intruder cat napping on the floor near the bed. However, the uninvited and unauthorized snoozer was a grey seal instead of a feline.

Zeeland, an animal welfare nonprofit, wrote in their post translated from Dutch to English, “We often receive strange reports and are not easily surprised anymore, but when we received a report tonight, we could not believe it at first.”

The Facebook post noted that, wisely, the paying guest chose not to disrupt the animal once they spotted it through the window. Instead, they allowed the exhausted but adorable seal to continue catching z’s and notified the hotel about the unusual situation.

They Were Able to Relocate the Seal Safely

The hotel quickly contacted local animal rescue groups for assistance. Zeeland Animal Welfare Foundation received help from Reddingsteam Zeedieren Nederland RTZ (Marine Animals Rescue Team Netherlands RTZ), and the two safely relocated the seal and restored the room for the rightful guest. Rescuers found that the sleepy seal appeared healthy and was unharmed during the relocation process, but he did seem “grumpy” about having his “beauty rest” interrupted!

The grey seal is a wild marine mammal and, evidently, known for napping in strange places. According to Reddingsteam Zeedieren Nederland RTZ, “A grey seal can be found in the craziest places. They look for a resting place and sometimes lie in the middle of a terrace or on the road.” And while the seal might have appeared harmless, they can be dangerous. “The grey seal likes to bite and is not an animal, despite its cute appearance, to be touched.”

While the little scare and inconvenience might have bothered Pier 7’s guest, they have a great story to share for years to come. And, according to ABC News, the snoring seal may very have gained access to the room after the guest accidentally left the beachfront door ajar.
