8-Year-Old With Down Syndrome Is a Hero After Saving Sister From House Fire

It was a day that could have ended in tragedy, but thanks to an eight-year-old with Down Syndrome, who is now a hero after saving his sister from a house fire, it did not end that way. Sometimes, the world tells us that people with disabilities can’t contribute much or that their lives don’t matter as much as others. But then we hear stories like Grayson’s and see how deeply wrong we can be.

Grayson is an 8-year-old with Down Syndrome. He didn’t know it, but God had given him the courage to do something incredible when his family needed it most. One afternoon, a fire broke out in their home. Chaos filled the air, and as the flames spread, it was Grayson’s cries to his older sister that helped save Ava’s life. He didn’t hesitate–he just started yelling, “Ava! Ava!” repeatedly. And it worked. Grayson’s voice reached his sister in time, who was upstairs in the house, giving her the time needed to escape the fire.

Their mother said, "He kind of saved her life. He's our hero."

As they made their way to the backyard, the police made their way to the house. They tore through a neighbor’s fence with their bare hands to get to the kids. But thanks to Grayson getting himself and his sister to the backyard, the police officers got them safely away from the fire.

It’s easy to look at someone like Grayson and think they can't make a significant impact. But the truth is, Grayson proved that it’s not what we lack that matters. It’s how God uses us in the moments that count. People often overlook others with disabilities, thinking they might be weak or without a purpose. But God shows us how powerful His love and plans can be through people like Grayson.

A Prayer for Your Adult Children This Holiday Season - Your Daily Prayer - December 11

We want our adult children to be blessed and enjoy a relationship with God. As their parents, we can intercede for them by praying Scripture over them. God loves them and knows them. We can trust God to keep them close to his heart and give them wisdom through the busy holiday season when so many events and expectations keep them racing.
