She Thought Her New Pup Was Ignoring Her But Turns Out The Rescue Dog Speaks Spanish

When God placed a rescue dog that “speaks” Spanish in the capable and compassionate custody of Ariana Giampietro, He demonstrated once again the perfection in all of His plans!

Ariana is a 26-year-old Gainesville, Florida, adoption case manager for children in care. And now it seems her personal life mirrors her profession.

Ariana lost her beloved Pitbull, Jack, to cancer at the age of 7 in November 2022. And, in an effort to heal from the loss, she decided to foster Pitbulls. She opened her home to Monty, an American Pitbull terrier mix, on December 30, 2022.

Monty was well-behaved. But he didn’t respond to any of Araina’s commands. “Sit down” and “Let’s go” seemed to mean nothing to Monty. The two were living together and confused for 8 days before Ariana found out the problem. "I could tell he wanted to - he was listening to me, but it was like he didn't know how,” said Ariana.

Ariana contacted the shelter and learned that Monty had been living on a farm with a Spanish-speaking family. It all made sense! The commands Ariana was using meant nothing to Monty because the rescue dog speaks Spanish.

And, once she began making commands in Monty’s native language, everything changed. Ariana watched Monty “settle right in,” quickly becoming more confident and happy! Monty has even become buddies with Ariana’s other Pitbull, English-speaking Lucy!

Excited and relieved to be able to communicate with Monty finally, Ariana said, “Once I found out about his background and realized it was because he only knew Spanish, I was amazed. I was so happy to understand where the dissonance came from.”

Ariana has now begun to learn Spanish herself, but her boyfriend has something to say about that. Andrew Gomez (27) works in local law enforcement and also speaks Spanish. However, prior to Monty’s arrival, Ariana had not taken the time to learn the language.

She shared, “It's weird - I had been telling my boyfriend for so long that I wanted to learn Spanish, and I downloaded Duolingo but never used it. Andrew now laughs about it because having a Spanish-speaking boyfriend never made me commit to Duolingo - but having a Spanish-speaking dog has.”

It seems to all fit together. Ariana specifically decided to foster Pitbulls in order to help the breed. She’d learned along the way that the dogs were “responsible” and “loyal,” and she wanted to reduce the stigma that says they are violent and untrainable.

Ariana works with kids and families that might experience stigma. She understands that sometimes you have to learn a new way to communicate with those from different backgrounds or in unique situations. And it seems that, for now, Monty is exactly where he needs to be!
