North Carolina’s Outer Banks offers an abundance of fun activities and attractions for travelers— not the least of which is one very special restaurant called Mama Kwans!

Known for wild mustangs, soaring lighthouses, and a rich history in the field of aviation, the Outer Banks is home to a restaurant with great food, fabulous service, and a ton of heart. Mama Kwans, located in Kill Devil Hills, is owned by Kevin Cherry. Mr. Cherry went way out of his way, giving generously of his time and energy, when he granted a particularly special wish.

Heather Bowers Had a Special Request

Heather Bowers of West Virginia had a specific request in her final hours. Having battled cancer for over three years and under the care of hospice, 47-year-old Heather shared a wish from her deathbed. She wanted to enjoy a meal from her favorite vacation spot; she wanted a pork plate from Mama Kwan’s.

So, Heather’s best friend, Mary Simmons, contacted Mama Kwans to see if it would be possible to ship a meal for her friend. Kevin Cherry did something far better. He drove nearly six hours to deliver Heather’s favorite meal to her WV home—before the day even ended!

While Mary knew it was a “long shot,” she never imagined that within just a few hours of contacting Kevin, he would come to Heather’s home to deliver a delicious NC meal and a smile.

Outer Banks Restaurant Mama Kwans Fullfilled Her Wish

The meal was Heather’s last. She died the next day. Mary expressed her deep appreciation for Kevin’s kindness and compassion, writing on Facebook:

“Kevin at Mama Kwans is one of the most genuine people in the world. He still has never met me in person and traveled over five hours to bring my best friend’s favorite meal to her, after one simple phone call. He literally delivered it to her house the same day I called to see if they could possibly ship food. This ended up being her last night on Earth as she passed away from cancer the next evening - less than 24 hours after he was able to meet her, her husband, and her two young children. Simply put - he made one of her last wishes come true. She wanted a meal from her family’s favorite vacation restaurant. This is something he didn’t want recognition for - however - kindness at this level deserves it! I speak for the whole Bowers’ family when I say thank you and God Bless your amazing heart!"

Mama Kwans Was One of Heather's Fondest Memories

Kevin’s Outer Banks Restaurant, Mama Kwans, had been among Heather’s fondest memories, and he created a new memory for her surviving family by delivering just what she wanted in her final hours. While the request was probably not what Kevin expected, he didn’t hesitate to make the trip.

Feeling emotional during the drive, Kevin sought to prepare himself for the visit. He shared, “About halfway up, I had to turn the radio off and had to talk to myself, saying, ‘You can't walk in here like this. You've got to walk in with a little bit of sunshine from the Outer Banks.’”
