Why The Voice Of Oswald Lawrence Means So Much

Oswald Lawrence, a retired actor, recorded the now-famous announcement decades ago in the 70s. His soothing, yet commanding voice guided subway riders for years, reminding them to "please mind the gap between the train and the platform."

However, the roots of this memorable phrase lie in a love that defied the boundaries of time and space.

Oswald Lawrence passed away. And his wife, Margaret McCollum Lawrence, would often find solace and comfort as she stood on the subway platform hearing her late husband’s voice. The announcements wrapped her in a warm embrace as she reminisced the years she had with her beloved before he passed away.

One day as Margaret sat on a subway bench waiting for her train, she heard a completely difference voice. The announcements were digital and devoid of warmth. It stripped her heart of the comfort it brought her after Oswald’s passing. Yet, even in his absence, the connection endured.

“When the voice was changed I was completely beside myself. I thought this is dreadful. What am I going to do? I can’t hear his voice," she said. Wanting to know what happened to her husband’s voice, Margaret contacted the Embankment subway station.

The love story surrounding the famous ‘Mind the Gap’ announcements moved the authorities. And the announcement by Oswald Lawrence was reinstated at that one station. All so a grieving wife could hear her husband’s voice again.
