Old English Sheepdog Who Appears to Have Special Powers, Receives an Award

Wallace, an old English Sheepdog who appears to have special powers, receives an award. When you first meet Wallace, his calm demeanor and soulful eyes draw you in. He’s not your average dog; he’s the kind of dog who seems to know the world a little better than the rest of us. "He just seemed to know. He knows a lot of things. It's like the dog has special powers,” his owner Allison Redgrave LaField said.

At just four years old, Wallace already saved a life, brought healing to countless hearts, and earned the 2024 AKC Humane Fund Award for Canine Excellence in the therapy dog category. But Wallace’s journey to heroism started in the most unassuming way. When Allison first met him, she said, he was a laid-back puppy who “lumbered around like Snuffeupagus from Sesame Street.” Allison, a swim coach in Texas had always dreamed of having a sheepdog, so when Wallace was available for adoption, she couldn't wait to bring him home.

The Old English Sheepdog is a Unicorn

She said, "He's never cranky, snappy, uncooperative, or vocal. Wallace is just Wallace. He's a unicorn. He's a different kind of dog. He's an old soul in dog form. He's not like any dog I've ever encountered." Wallace’s steady, intuitive nature became more apparent as he grew. Whether he was quietly sensing emotions or offering companionship, Wallace exuded a quiet wisdom that set him apart.

It wasn’t long after this when he saved her life. Allison had fallen and hit her head in the pool because of a seizure. She didn’t know which way was up until Wallace jumped in and stayed beside her as she found her way to the pool's edge. Since then, he’s vigilant about alerting Allison when she is about to have a seizure.

Wallace’s "special powers" extend far beyond his bond with Allison. At her swim practices, he instinctively spots swimmers in distress, alerting lifeguards before anyone else notices. He also has a gift for sensing emotional and physical needs, often approaching strangers who are quietly struggling with grief or trauma. He has a unique way of reading people and finds the one person in the crowd of strangers who needs him most. Because of his special superpowers, Allison was encouraged to enroll him as a therapy dog at the Brooke Army Medical Center.

He Now Works With the Military As Well As Middle Schoolers

This old, special soul of a dog works with military and amputee programs and also works with middle schoolers. Unsurprisingly, he offers comfort, compassion, and love to every person he works with. He just knows how and when to comfort those who need it most.

Because of his magical abilities, he earned the 2024 AKC Humane Fund Award for Canine Excellence. As for Wallace, he doesn’t seem fazed by all the attention or his well-deserved award. Instead, he happily wags his tail and lumbers on to the next person who needs him to do what he does best–offering love, comfort, and a little extra magic wherever he goes.
