Town Discovers Their Beloved 'Mick the Milk' Needs Help and Rally to Make Sure He's Set

Residents of a town near London, England, came together to help their retiring and beloved milkman, giving him nearly $20,000.

Retirement, the chance to sit back and take it easy, is a goal for most people. The golden years are a period filled with traveling, family and not going to a 9 to 5. But sometimes retirement can be a financial struggle.

That’s why people in St. Albans, England, a town less than 30 miles from London, stepped up to help out 65-year-old Mick Tutton, according to Good News Network.

Mick, better known as “Mick the Milk” by the residents of St. Albans, has been delivering milk to residents for almost 50 years, since 1976, according to the St. Albans Advertiser. Mick, to the townspeople, is a friendly place and a beloved member of the community.

The milkman, by those who know him best, is said to be “the community’s unofficial security guard, social worker, football pundit and cheerleader,” according to the Daily Telegraph.

When Mick’s milk delivery truck broke down, the milkman decided it was time to call it a career.

However, the timing for Mick’s retirement was not the greatest. It came an entire year before he was set to start receiving his pension from the state, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The Towns Residents Came Together and Raised Thousands of Dollars For Their Milkman

The townspeople of St. Albans got to work, determined to assist their beloved milkman. Good News Network states that a fundraiser at a local pub in town was organized one evening. It brought in nearly $20,000, which was all for the “Mick the Milk.”

The fundraiser organizer, Kate Crick, told the St. Albans Advertiser Mick “has been an integral part of our community.”

“He looked out for people, especially the elderly, and became a family friend to many of us,” she said. “Our children have grown up knowing and loving him, and our dogs, too. Mick always carried some doggie treats. They got so excited when they saw his float coming down the road.”

Mick started in the milk-delivering game at just 16, while working with his father. He's grateful for his career and the community of lovely people he has met along the way.

“So then, as we have the chance, let us do good to all men, and especially to those who are of the family of faith.”Galatians 6:10

A Prayer to Stir Up Thanksgiving Gratefulness - Your Daily Prayer - November 28

One way the Pilgrims showed thankfulness was by being generous with the Native Americans, sharing their faith, time, and harvest with them. Like them, we can stir up Thanksgiving gratefulness around us, too, by being generous.
