Back to the Future Inspired Coldplay

The lead singer of Coldplay, Chris Martin, announced, "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Michael J. Fox!" He then sang, "With his Chuck Barry rift and the way he punched Biff." A shoutout to Michael J. Fox's most famous role as Marty McFly in the 1985 movie Back to the Future, with which Chris has a strong connection.

"The main reason we're in a band is because of watching 'Back to the Future,'" Chris said to the crowd. "Thank you to our hero forever and one of the most amazing people on Earth, Mr. Michael J. Fox. Thank you so much Michael, our hero."

Michael sat in a wheelchair on stage and played the guitar in his lap. He was jamming out with the band; you could tell how much he enjoyed being on the stage. The audience was truly inspired by seeing Michael up there.

Michael Was Diagnosed With Parkinson's Disease in 1991

This wasn't the first time Michael J Fox made an appearance with Coldplay. Back in 2016, he performed "Johnny B. Goode" in NYC.

One of the reasons this is so inspiring to see is because of the health struggles Michael has gone through over the past 30+ years. He was diagnosed in 1991 with Parkinson's disease when he was only 29 years old and went public with the diagnosis a few years later, in 1998.

He has been public about his struggles and updates fans about what he is dealing with. In a recent CBS News Sunday interview, he said, "I mean, I’m not gonna lie. It’s getting hard ... it’s getting tougher. Every day, it’s tougher. But that’s the way it is. I mean, you know, who do I see about that?"

According to the Mayo Clinic, Parkinson's disease can cause tremors, slowed movement, rigid muscles, impaired posture and balance, speech and writing changes, and loss of automatic movements. This makes Michael J Fox's appearance on stage all that more special. We thank Coldplay for inviting Michael and creating such a memorable performance together. It's truly heartwarming and inspiring to see.
