Daughter Credits Jesus & Prayers As Mary Lou Retton Heads Home After Fighting for Her Life

Christian and gold medal-winning Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton is back home and recovering following a stay in the hospital, and the Olympian’s daughter is now praising Jesus and the power of prayer.

When it comes to life, it’s generally a good idea to expect the unexpected. Yes, that means goodness, happiness and joy can come from unexpected places and sources. However, on the other hand, that also means that hurt, pain and heartache can crop up at a moment’s notice.

The health and safety of a loved one is an area in which this idea of unpredictability rings particularly true. The family of Mary Lou Retton, a former Olympic gymnast who took home gold for the US in the 1984 games, understands this sad reality all too well.

However, in an update on social media posted Monday, McKenna Kelley, Mary Lou’s daughter, shared some positive news about her mother.

“Mom is HOME & in recovery mode. We still have a long road of recovery ahead of us, but baby steps,” the post reads.

McKenna ends her Instagram post by praising and thanking those involved in her mother’s care, including Jesus Christ.

“Thank you Jesus, thank you doctors & nurses, thank you to this loving community of support.”

In mid-October, it was revealed that Mary Lou had entered a hospital. She was put in the intensive care unit after becoming ill with and fighting what was described as a “very rare form of pneumonia” by her family.

Olympian's Daughter Wrote Prayers Are Being Answered And Praised Jesus

On a page to raise funds for her medical care, the family wrote she could not "breathe on her own.” They said she was fighting for her life. That message went on to ask for prayers for Mary Lou.

Before Monday's post, McKenna wrote that while her mother was still in the hospital, Mary Lou was showing positive signs. She wrote how “prayers have been felt and are being answered.”

As McKenna mentioned in her latest update, while her mother is now home, she continues to recover from pneumonia. The family and Mary Lou would likely appreciate any and all prayers for them during this time.
