Granddaughter Captures Last Words Between Grandparents, Married For 69 Years

Few things leave a legacy like a long, happy marriage, and this couple—married for 69 incredible years—did that very thing. Of all the wonders, experiences, and miracles that life offers, a prosperous, lengthy marriage rich with grace, admiration, romance, faith, and devotion is one of the most impactful. Paul and Meleda Lallier shared such a marriage, and their children and grandchildren were blessed to observe it all!

Kasandra Lallier is one of Paul and Meleda’s grandchildren. On October 30, 2024, her older sister called to say that their grandfather’s health was quickly deteriorating, so she went to visit him. Once there, she captured a few precious moments of conversation between her grandparents. The sweet words exchanged between the two will stay with Kasandra for years to come, just as her memories of growing up in such a loving family have.

The Couple Married In 1955

Kasandra told People that Paul and Meleda’s relationship began when they met at the small bar Meleda’s mother owned. The two grew up in Quebec, Canada, and, at the time, Paul was working as a bouncer at the tavern. Kasandra shared, “It was like love at first sight.” The pair married on May 28, 1955. Paul was 21; Meleda was 18.

Kasandra, who lives in Delray Beach, Florida, has fond memories of summers shared with her grandparents at the family’s cottage in Canada. She recalls hanging out on the pontoon, tubing with cousins on the lake, and family gatherings—each filled with love and laughter. Kasandra shared about her grandfather, “Family dinners every week and weekend BBQs were traditions we all looked forward to, and he made every holiday, graduation, wedding and anniversary feel even more special. Family meant everything to him, and we were a close-knit group because of his example.”

After receiving the call from her older sister Bianca, Kasandra arrived at her grandparents’ home and found Paul to be more talkative than usual. When she noticed her grandmother move closer to him, Kasandra decided to record their exchange. Kasandra had always seen Meleda say the words “I love you” first; this time, though, Paul was the first to say it. She said, “Hearing him say it for the first time was an incredibly emotional moment.”

She Said Goodbye After Being Married 69 Years

The video continues as Meleda responds, “Yeah, me too. For 70 years. 69. You’re the best, the best, the best husband.” While her heart must be breaking, she is composed and strong as she leans in close to her husband of 69 years. What an inspiration!

Following Paul’s death on November 2nd, Kasandra posted the touching video on TikTok. Kasandra’s video went viral and has garnered nearly 4 million views and 4,000 comments! Viewers were incredibly moved by the love shared by these two special individuals!

Kasandra told People, “I was truly surprised by the number of views and comments, but then I realized just how special that moment was and how rare it is to witness love like theirs. It made me feel incredibly happy knowing I could share a glimpse of the deep bond they had.”

True Love Can Withstand Any Challenge

During Paul’s final days, family members gathered at his home. They shared stories and appreciated every moment together. Kasandra shared, “We had one last glass of wine with him, raising a toast to him, my grandmother, and the beautiful life our family has built. It was heartbreaking, but also comforting, to be able to share those special moments.”

“This is proof that true love can withstand any challenge, that you should never give up, and that genuine love is always worth finding,” Kasandra added. “A relationship is not about how much you love each other at the beginning, but how much you’re willing to sacrifice and grow together in the long run.”
