Marine's Lost Dog Tags Found Overseas Finally Make It Back Home To Veteran After 57 Years

A family has received the dog tags of a late Vietnam War veteran after nearly 60 years.

War is an awful, horrible practice that leaves death and destruction in its wake. Those who have experienced war, can be left with deep and painful scars, both physically and emotionally.

Marine Corporal Larry Hughes, who passed away in 2019, did not talk about his time during the war in Vietnam, according to Fox 13.

"He was very humble. He never talked about his time in the service," Carl Hughes, Larry's son said.

Larry’s son and sister received Larry's tags, which were lost more than 50 years ago, during a service in February

During a student trip to Vietnam late last year led by a Notre Dame University professor and a former United States Senator Jim Webb, a humble villager approached the group and informed them he had found six dog tags over the years.

The man came upon the tags while working in his rice fields. The villager handed over the recovered dog tags, one of which was Larry’s, to the group.

The two leaders of the group set up a ceremony to give the tags to Larry's family.

Larry's sister, Patricia Hughes Prickett, said she was overwhelmed by the discovery.

"I couldn't believe it. It was like a step back in time," Patricia said.

Lost Dog Tags Returned To Family During Special February Ceremony

In addition to his modesty, Larry's family believes his reluctance to discuss his time fighting in the Asian country may have had to do with his perceived lack of recognition for his service.

During the ceremony in February, Larry was honored for his service to the United States.

His family received a plaque which will hang at the Inglis, Florida town hall, according to WCJB.

“I am honored and excited for what they did today, not just for my father, but all the marines and other service members who were over in Vietnam, fought for them, fought for our own country as well,” Carl said.
