Mom-Of-5 Spends 379 Hours On Hand-Sewn Wedding Dress And The Results Are Stunning

What could be more precious than a hand-sewn wedding dress on your big day? This is an incredible story about a daughter who was inspired by her own mother who “sewed everything for her.”

It’s also a story about overcoming the odds of finances, time, and exhaustion while planning a wedding amidst the pandemic. A mom-of-five spends 379 hours on her hand-sewn wedding dress and the results are stunning.

Mom-Of-5 Takes On Extra Special Project

Chelsea Komm found the love of her life, a man by the name of Chase. They had planned to say, “I do,” in August of 2020. But by then COVID-19 had become a global pandemic and the couple had to cancel their wedding.

Like everyone else, their lives had come to a screeching stop and Chelsea found herself battling depression. Instead of planning for a wedding, going to work, and taking the kids to school, she found herself isolated and ‘social distancing’ while homeschooling five children on her own.

Some days were just too much and the idea of getting out of bed was like climbing Mt. Everest. “I had zero motivation, no energy, I was staying in bed every chance I got. I even did the kids’ classes in bed.”

She says the spark that brought her back to life was her wedding dress. She had mentioned to her fiance how her mom used to sew everything for her. Additionally, she had grown up hearing stories about how the women in her family had sewn their own wedding dresses too.

Inspired by her mama, Chelsea Komm wanted to stitch every detail on her own wedding dress. When she mentioned the idea to Chase, he loved the idea and even purchased a gift card to Amazon and other supplies to help her get started. This was the thread that began mending the fabric of her life back together.

God certainly can use anything to inspire us. Even the pain-staking task of thousands upon thousands of tiny stitches. “It was as if it brought me back to life. It flipped my switch back on. I honestly believe that dress saved me,” she said.

Chelsea gathered up her dreams, an image of the dress in her mind, she also purchased a mannequin and two other used dresses from Goodwill to form the basis for her gown. (Who else remembers Molly Ringwald’s character in the movie ‘Pretty In Pink’ upcycling her dress?)

Chelsea then got to work on creating a dress inspired by ‘The Anna Campbell 2018 Collection.’ The designer Anna Campbell dresses were far beyond this homeschooling mom’s price range but it didn’t stop her from creating the dress of her dreams–even though she never learned to use a sewing machine.

“I didn’t have a sewing machine, working table, nothing. I didn’t even have a ring on my finger yet. All I had was the floor, scissors, a needle and thread, leftover beads from other projects, and an overload of ambition,” Chelsea said. She then got to work and got back to living life.

Mom Spends 379 Hours On Dress Of Her Dreams

After 379 hours and spending $1,199.43, her dress came to life. Chelsea Komm says the bodice and straps took a total of 190 hours alone! When friends and family see her completed wedding dress, they are in awe of the detail, the delicate lace, and the hundreds upon hundreds of beads. They wonder how she did it.

“I’d do a couple of cuts and pins, then step back, go back in to adjust, and step back again; go back in, make a couple of stitches, then step back again. It was a very repetitive learning process. But well worth it.”

Now that her wedding dress is complete, Chelsea couldn’t be more proud. She can’t wait to walk down the aisle in something old and something definitely new and something made with vast amounts of love.
