Great-Grandma with Cane Comes to Elderly Neighbor's Rescue and Fends Off Purse Snatcher

Hally Wells

Miss Faye is a grandma with a cane, and most would say that Faye is one spunky lady. In reality, this 76-year-old great-grandmother of West Oakland, California, is much more than spunky or plucky; those words don’t do Miss Faye justice. The words gutsy, fearless, heroic, gritty, and lionhearted do a much better job conveying this neighborhood watchdog's heart!

One day, Miss Faye was looking outside her home when an unfamiliar car caught her attention. The unknown driver jumped from the car and grabbed the purse of one of Faye’s neighbors, Ann Butler. The purse snatcher knocked down the elderly woman and was struggling with her when Faye came running toward the two.

Though Miss Faye had bad knees, she moved quickly. Calling her German shepherd Troy to help and brandishing her cane, she yelled at the criminal. Fortunately, the suspect got back in the car and sped off. And, though battered and bruised, Ann still has her purse and is doing fine!

It appears the crook followed Ann, who was walking home from a restaurant, in order to steal her purse. Miss Faye commented to NBC Bay Area, “Shame, shame on them, that’s all I say is shame on them. What kind of upbringing did they have? What kind of drugs are they on to make them do that to a person?”

Miss Faye, already recognized as a leader in her community, is being applauded for her bravery. Though law enforcement never recommends that citizens take matters like this into their own hands, Faye’s actions saved Ann. Ann said, “She is my hero, I told her that, she is my hero.”

Another neighbor, Mel Oppenheim, described Faye, saying, “She is just a tough lady, she knows what she wants, she will get it no matter what, and she loves her community and would do anything to protect it.”

Neighbors are working to find ways to thank Miss Faye for her heroic actions and her consistent dedication to the community.
