An unexpected act of kindness and generosity can literally change the circumstances of someone’s life. One such move from John Perrett did that for Jane Sayner.
Jane, 74, lives in Melbourne, Australia, in a house given to her out of the blue one day. It all started with a phone call from her landlord of more than two decades, John Perrett.

Jane had been renting her two-bedroom home from John for 23 years, according to 9Now. During those more than two decades of renting the house, Jane paid John $200 a week.
But then something extraordinary happened!
“I got a phone call from him one day and said, ‘I want you to talk to my solicitor, he’s here at the moment and can you give him your full name? Because I’m leaving you the unit,”’ Jane told A Current Affair.
Jane was taken aback by the statement from John. At first, she thought perhaps there was something wrong with her hearing.
“Very, very unexpected. And I thought maybe, maybe I didn’t hear it right,” Jane said with a laugh.
John’s generous gift came after he had moved into a nursing home with Parkinson’s disease. Sadly, John passed away in September 2020. John was 86 years old, according to A Current Affair.
Jane adds that John’s gift made it possible for her to retire.
“Well, it changed my life, in the fact that, I didn’t have to worry,” Jane said. “I know where I was going to live for the rest of it and maybe eventually, I could retire. And I have.”
But giving Jane the home was not John’s biggest gift before his passing. John, a multi-millionaire who lived frugally, made a massive donation - $19.6 million – to a Melbourne hospital, 9Now reports.
During those years, Jane and John became more than just landlord and tenant. They became friends!
“I miss our chats, yes,” Jane said about John.
She later added that she remains grateful for John’s generous move.
“I thank him still every day of my life,” Jane said.
