Firefighters risk their lives everyday to help their community. When danger calls they run toward it while everyone else runs away. But some firefighters chose to take even their time off to go above and beyond for their community. Firefighters like the ones at Station 1 in Marlboro, Massachusetts. For the past three years these heroes found a new way to help their community by providing Thanksgiving meals to families in need.
Families like Maria Rivera and her three kids. Maria is a single mom whose family just recently moved out of a shelter. She has to carefully watch every penny to make sure she can put food on the table day to day. So, the idea of spending so much for one meal just was not in the cards.
Bob Dolan is a 28 year veteran of the Marlboro fire department who now runs the special Thanksgiving program. He knows that there are tons of families like Maria's who deserve to have a day to sit together, rest and enjoy the holiday.
So happily, he and other firefighters spend their time doing serious grocery shopping and then dividing the meals up to take to locals. Bob knows that what these guys are doing is just fulfilling the department's motto "Our family helping your family." This year they delivered peace of mind and holiday cheer to two dozen families in need. And when you see the looks on the faces of those families you will know what a beautiful thing these firefighters are doing!
Watching as thankful children draw pictures and give hugs to these kind men will remind you what the holidays are all about. Take some time this week to be thankful, and be a blessing to someone in need. Let's follow the example set by these incredible men.
