Dying Veteran Is Deeply Moved As the Diploma He'd Never Received Is Delivered to His Bedside

A diploma awarded to a modern-day hero moves hundreds to honor him. A dying veteran is deeply moved as the diploma he’d never received is delivered to his bedside just three days before he passed away.

Richard “Gunny” Remp’s lifelong dream of earning his high school diploma remained unfulfilled for decades, overshadowed by his heroic military service. Richard, who left high school to join the fight in World War II, continued his valorous journey through Korea and Vietnam. He never returned to complete his senior year. At 98, diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, Richard confided in his friends that his dying wish was to hold his diploma.

His Friends Reached Out To The School Board

Moved by his story, his friends reached out to the school board in Sharon, PA, hoping to secure an honorary diploma for him. The school board, recognizing his immense sacrifice, readily agreed to help. However, as preparations were underway, Richard’s health declined rapidly, and he moved to hospice care, unable to travel home.

Julien Singh, commander of the American Legion post in Poolesville, received a message from Sharon City School District Superintendent Justi Glaros. “She’s like, ‘I’m printing his diploma now. I’ll be there in 4½ hours,’” he recounted. To Justi, honoring Richard’s final wish was paramount, and she made the long drive without hesitation.

“It was like a scene from a Hallmark movie,” Julien reflected. “These things, you don’t see these things happen every day, and it was incredible to see it unfold in front of your eyes.” God was using ordinary people to make Gunny’s lifelong dream come true.

Richard Was Awarded His Diploma

Arriving just in time, Justi presented the diploma to Richard. Richard finally held his high school diploma, fulfilling a dream he had cherished for over 80 years. He was surrounded by friends and family. “When I got there, it was all rather surreal,” Justi shared. “I was nervous because I felt like I was meeting a rock star… Here’s this man who’s a highly decorated veteran who really had, from the age of 17, given his entire life to serve our country and to protect our freedoms.”

Three days later, Richard Remp passed away, his final wish granted. To honor his memory, Sharon High School will hold a moment of silence during its graduation ceremony next month. Richard’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, the strength of community, and the enduring spirit of a hero. God often uses ordinary people to show His extraordinary care for our dreams, like earning a diploma. Through the kindness and efforts of those around us, He reminds us that our aspirations matter and that we are never alone in our journey.
