Dad Apologizes To Former Classmate He Bullied Years Ago

Daddy - Daughter Talk About BulliesĀ

I have lost count how many times we have had a conversation with one of our children in hopes of teaching them a life lesson about ( fill in the blank with any topic ). AND I have equally lost count how many times I'M the one to learn a lesson. Children are amazing that way. Well, this Dad must feel the same way.

The conversation between this Dad and his 10-year-old daughter was about bullies. And in the course of the conversation, this little girl asked her dad, "Have you ever bullied anyone?"

And, sadly, this Dad answered, "yes."

And it was from this sweet, little, angel that this Dad realized how important it would be to apologize - albeit for something years ago in Jr. High School - for his bully-behavior. So, that's exactly what he did.

At 1 a.m. heĀ sent this text:

"Hey Chad,

I was recently talking with my 10 year old daughter about bullies. She asked me if I ever bullied anyone and sadly I had to say 'yes.' What came to mind is how s****y and mean I was to you when we were in Jr. High. I want to apologize. If we lived in the same state I would apologize to your face. I don't even know if you remember, but I do and I'm sorry."

And within hours, this is what he received in return:

"Louie,

I'm quite moved by this. Thank you and accept your apology. In 20 years you are the only person to apologize for being a bully to me when we were younger. I hope you can proudly tell your daughter that you have also apologized for it, and that we are good. It's amazing what 20 years and children can do to us, no? Thank you again, and I hope you stand up to bullying any time you see it. Have a great day!"

This classmates forgiveness was very important and much appreciated, prompting this Dad to send one more text:

"Thank you. Your forgiveness means more than you know and I hope I am not the last to ask forgiveness from you. Cheers!"

Thank you, Dad, for following your daughter's advice and your heart. Making amends is a powerful act of kindness and only does good things. May you be blessed by this simple act of offering an apology and for receiving forgiveness.

The Bible reminds us, "Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you." 1 Peter 5:6-7
