A Couple And Their Injured Dog Needed Help And Then A Boy Scout Came To Their Rescue

One Boy Scout rescued a couple after their dog became injured on a trail in Hawaii. He made sure to put his survival skills to the test, and he managed to save the day!

Recently, 12-year-old David King was out hiking with his mother, Christine, in order to earn his Boy Scouts Merit Badge. They were nearing the end of their 15-mile hike when they came across a couple named JD and Aimee.

The couple also had a dog with them named Smokey who was injured and weighed about 100 pounds.

"We asked, 'Oh, do you need any help?' And they said, 'Yeah,'" David shared. "They showed us the dog's paws. It had some cuts on it. So, it hurt when the dog would walk. When the dog would walk, it would just be really painful."

The couple had actually gotten lost on the trail, and they started to panic as darkness started to fall. Their cell phones were dead, they did not have any more food or water, and their dog was unable to walk from his injuries.

But David came to the rescue with his Boy Scout survival skills! After he realized the dog was too heavy to carry off the trail, he ended up making a stretcher for Smokey.

"We built them a stretcher using a big tree branch that we broke in half and used our shirts and slid it on using the armholes to fit the sticks through," David explained.

His idea worked, and David, along with his mother and the couple, were able to bring Smokey to safety.

"It was really tough, but we rotated," David said. "Sometimes we did four people, two on each side. Or two people — my mom and the man.”

Once they all got off the trail and back to the parking lot, JD and Aimee took Smokey to get the medical attention he needed. Later, David and Christine checked in with the couple, and they are happy to report that everyone has recovered from the hike.

Way to save the day, David! And the 12-year-old reflected on his good deed and shared some insightful words.

"I think that when you help someone out, it's like joy in you, that you know you did something good that day," he said. "To help someone using my Boy Scout skills makes me feel accomplished because it shows I've learned something, and it wasn't all in one ear and out the other. Always listen to instructions and what you are learning in class."

A Prayer to Stir Up Thanksgiving Gratefulness - Your Daily Prayer - November 28

One way the Pilgrims showed thankfulness was by being generous with the Native Americans, sharing their faith, time, and harvest with them. Like them, we can stir up Thanksgiving gratefulness around us, too, by being generous.
