With every passing day, it seems our nation is falling deeper and deeper into sin. School shootings, new abortion laws, and equality issues that do more harm than good plague our land. It’s easy to think God is not in control of us anymore. Yet, these 7 Bible verses about country reassure us not to be fearful about our nation but instead live in the comfort God has us!
Psalm 46:1 - “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.” If there is one characteristic of God that is revealed in Scripture it is that God is a gracious God.
He always helps us in trouble, even if we made the trouble on our own. This is not a recipe to keep on sinning, but a promise that God will always be there for us as a nation, no matter how desperate our situation. It may seem like the earth is giving easy to sin, but as the scripture says, don’t fear. God will help us even when the situation looks bleak.
2 Chronicles 7:14 - “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” I believe if every Christian did this, we would see revival in our nation. What is interesting about his verse is that we must be humble. It is not enough to pray and ask God for his healing, we must ask with humility. This means we must analyze our heats and see what role we have played in the destruction of our nation.
Take a minute and ask yourself: what boundary have I crossed that goes against God’s word? In what ways have I kept silent while sin spreads across our nation? Confess those to God. Repent and do what is right. Healing happens when the nation is ready. Be a part of making the nation ready.
Jeremiah 29:11- “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” While this verse is popular to use for graduates, newlywed couples and children, what people often miss is that the previous verse says it will be seventy years before God’s plan is completed in Babylon. Talk about patience! I can imagine the Israelites were discouraged to have to wait seventy years before God’s plan was revealed.
Much like today, it will seem like forever before God will heal our land. Yet, God has a plan and a purpose for every event. God wants His children to spread the Gospel message as far and wide as possible before He returns.
Mark 4:39- “And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. After this, the disciples asked themselves, “who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him?” if we serve a God who can calm a storm with two words, surely we can leave our nation in his capable hands.
This was mind-boggling to the disciples that he had such authority. Yet, by being connected to his father, he could control even the wind and the waves.
We may not be able to control the wind and the waves, but we can trust in the one who does. Let Jesus calm our nation’s storms as he sees fit, and everything will fall into place.
Isaiah 41:10 - “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” If you are a Christian, you’ve read the end of the story. We win! There will come a day when Satan will be destroyed, God will do a new thing, and will make a new heaven and a new earth. But for now, we can take comfort in knowing He holds all of us in His hand. This is a great shift in perspective.
We may only see our world through our bubble, and things may look bleak. But think about this: God is bigger than we can imagine. We are so small and play a small (yet important) role in the Kingdom, we fit in the palm of His hand. When we put our lives in this perspective, we understand God is in control every detail of both our lives and everyone else’s on this earth.
Exodus 14:14 - “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” The Israelites are watching as a large army is approaching. They realize there are too many to fight alone. What is God’s advice? Lay down their swords! This seems counterintuitive. Yet, it is only when they lay down their own weapons and stop fighting against God that He is allowed to work on their behalf.
Our tendency as Christians is to shout and fight for our causes, doing our best to keep the bible at the forefront of culture and God at the forefront of people’s minds. Yet, when we surrender our weapons to the Lord and be still in his presence, He does the impossible. God is in control of our nation, but first we must be willing to lay down our weapons and let Him fight for us.
Proverbs 16:9 - “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD orders their steps.” I am a planner. My tendency is to want to know everything that is going to happen before it does. Yet, God only allows those plans to prosper when He ordains it to be so. He knows when we will surrender and when we will rebel, when we falter and when we walk in step with him.
God asks us to let him lead. Like a man and a woman in a dance, one person must lead to allow the dance to be successful. God asks us as Christians to let Him lead. That way, we can walk in step with him.
If we can surrender our will to the Lord’s and humbly ask Him to heal our land our God will be our help. We only need to ask.
