Meet Pontus Gitselov of Växjö, Sweden. He’s a 27-year-old credit analyst who met 27-year-old Chicago native and novelist Emma Noyes through a dating app in December 2021. The two were living in Los Angeles at the time, and their courtship began there. But, in time, they traveled to his home in Sweden and returned to Chicago to meet one another’s families.
Pontus formed a particular connection with Emma’s 90-year-old grandmother. The woman is affectionately called Gramsie, but known within Indiana political circles as Senator Virgina Blankenbaker. She served in the Indiana State Senate from 1981-1996.
Pontus never met his grandparents, so he adopted Mrs. Blankenbaker as his own.

He said, “She has a very big heart and is one of the kindest human beings I have ever met.”
So, when Pontus wrote a poem for Gramsie on the occasion of her 90th birthday and asked Emma to record him reading it to her, it made complete sense.
The family was on a celebratory trip to Dallas, and the video shows Pontus as he escorts Emma’s grandmother to a beautiful space on the grounds of the hotel where they stayed. Notice how spry and fit Mrs. Blankenbaker is!

Pontus takes Gramsie’s hands into his own and reads the poem he’d written just for her, and Emma captures the moment for them to enjoy years into the future. Gramsie appears touched—she, too, had developed a love for Emma’s boyfriend. Then, without warning, Pontus turns his attention to Emma.
He pulls a small box from his pocket and kneels down. Gramsie, unaware of this part of Pontus’s plan, clasps her hands together! She realizes what is taking place. It takes Emma a bit longer. She thought the whole scene was about her grandmother, but her clever, sweet boyfriend had a second surprise—this one, just for her!

The taping gets momentarily lost amidst frantic questions, laughter, and an embrace, but we get to see how this tender, loving proposal turns out! Emma is beyond thrilled. She’s got a ring, a bundle of flowers, a future with her “best friend,” and she got to share it all with her very special grandmother!
The couple is planning a July 2024 wedding, and one wonders if this story might just make its way into a future Emma Noyes novel!
