Are you in the mood for a good tearjerker? Whether you have a girl’s night planned or just want to watch a dramatic and serious film, Netflix has many movies to choose from. These types of movies are often based on true stories and how people overcame unthinkable circumstances, so they are not all appropriate for children to watch.
Here are 10 movies on Netflix instant that will make you cry.
10. Grace Unplugged (2013 – Rated PG)
Grace is the daughter of singing legend Johnny Trey and everyone assumes she loves performing with her father, but she grows to resent him and his style of music. She can’t wait to get a shot to write and create her own music walking her own path. Her father’s old manager ends up giving Grace the chance she has been waiting for. She runs from life in order to pursue music and ends up realizing that this isn’t what God has in store for her. Grace returns home and her life, including her relationship with her father is restored. Grace Unplugged is a family-friendly film.
9. Cyberbully (2011 – TV 14)
Cyberbully was originally a TV movie that aired on ABC Family. Taylor Hillridge is smart, pretty and has a great group of friends. One of her friends becomes jealous of her and creates a fake profile online, posing as a guy interested in her. This turns into cyberbullying and deeply affects Taylor. Her mother finally learns the truth and fights to save her daughter from attempting suicide. This film shows how easy it is for teens to fall prey into cyberbullying and what steps parents, teachers and friends can take to end the game playing. Cyberbully is a family-friendly film.
8. Johnny (2010 – Not Rated)
Ten-Year old Johnny lives in a foster home and is dying of leukemia. He sees Doctor Carter with hopes and faith in God that he can help and the doctor helps him more than he could have ever imagined. Doctor Carter and his wife, Julia, lost their son two years beforehand and haven’t truly recovered. Julia rejects Johnny at first, although he bonds with their nine-year-old daughter. Johnny’s faith brings healing and restoration to Doctor Carter’s family. Johnny is a family-friendly film.
7. Raising Izzie (2012 – Not Rated)
Gertie and Izzie are sisters and they are left alone after their mother losses her battle to cancer. They continue living in their apartment and rely on funds their mother had secured, but Gertie’s teacher Mrs. Freeman (played by Vanessa Williams) begins asking questions and becomes curious. The sisters face a predicament when their apartment burns and they need an adult to sign for a new apartment. Mrs. Freeman invites them to stay with her and her husband Greg for the weekend and tragedy nearly strikes when she gets hit by a car. Greg decides to let the girls stay while Mrs. Freeman is in the hospital and he becomes attached to the girls. Raising Izzie is a family-friendly film.
6. The 5th Quarter (2010 – PG)
At 15, Luke Abbate is a responsible son, football player, friend and brother when he makes the choice to get a ride home from school from a student he doesn’t know well. The driver is irresponsible and losses control of the vehicle and Luke dies. Luke’s older brother Jon who plays football at Wake Forrest is completely torn a part. Jon nearly gives up football and loses himself but his football team rallies behind him. The 5th Quarter is a family-friendly film.
5. Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002 – PG)
White men were settling Western Australia in the 1930’s and believed that children who are racially mixed need to be institutionalized. Three young Australian girls are ripped from their families and the oldest – Molly – quickly realizes the unfair, harsh and dehumanizing conditions they are being force to live under. Molly (14) leads her sister Daisy (10) and cousin Grace (8) to escape from Gulag. The tracker passes right by them and they find their way to the rabbit-proof fence and end up walking over 1,000s to return home.
4. A Little Bit of Heaven (2011 – PG-13)
Marley Corbett (played by Kate Hudson) has the perfect career, a great group of friends and a full life ahead of her when she learns she has terminal cancer. Doctor Julian Goldstein (played by Gael Garcia Bernal) is the oncologist who happens to be Marley’s doctor. Although he’s warned not to date patients, he can’t help but fall in love with her. Marley talks to God in a dream and has a chance to make three wishes, which all come true throughout the story. You will fall in love with Marley’s witty sense of humor and the way she maintains dignity throughout her battle.
3. October Baby (2011 – PG-13)
Hannah (played by Rachel Hendrix) is in college when her world turns upside down after learning the truth about her birth and adoption. She never knew she was adopted, but a medical condition prompted the truth to finally come out. Hannah’s birth mother was pregnant with twins as a teenager and opted for an abortion. Jacob and Grace Hendrix adopted Hannah and her brother, but only she survived. Now she is on a journey to find her birth mother. This movie takes you through the mixed emotions of hope, abandonment, rejection and restoration as name endures the painful truth.
2. Hachi: A Dog’s Tale (2009 – G)
If you are an animal lover, make sure you have a box of tissues ready before you watch this movie. Professor Parker Wilson (played by Richard Gere) finds a stray dog at the train station and takes him in on a cold night. Knowing his wife doesn’t want a dog; he sneaks the puppy into the house and tries to keep him quiet. He starts looking for the owner and becomes attached. His wife notices his love for the puppy Hachi and lets him stay. Hachi was never one for playing fetch, but one day he brings a ball on his daily walk with Professor Parker. Hachi is actually trying to warn his beloved friend and it turns into the last time Hachi sees his owner. Hachi: A Dog’s Tale is a family-friendly film.
1. Listen To Your Heart (2010 – PG)
Danny works in a diner, but his passion is to become a songwriter. While working one day Ariana comes into the diner with her mother and stepfather and there is an instant connection between the two. Ariana comes back to the diner two weeks later to speak with Danny and he learns that she is deaf. This is the least of their challenges as Ariana’s mother does everything she can to control her daughter and prevent the their relationship from developing. Ariana learns to fight for what she wants as Danny falls into fighting for his life. I cried so much during this movie and I promise you will not regret watching this movie!
