10 Best Clean Romance Movies

As the chilly fall air reminds us of winter coming, I’m drawn to pumpkin muffins, caramel apple lattes and good romantic movies. There are many great ones that offer a clean storyline, so little ears can stay in the room. So many people are drawn to movies that are centered around love because they bring hope and even follow storylines that are eerily close to real life for some.

Here are my 10 best clean romance movies. They are oldies, but goodies, so wrap up in a fleece blanket and let your kids or pets curl up to warm your toes while your soul is filled with laughter and touching moments.

“The Truth" Proverbs 24:14 “Know that wisdom is such to your soul; if you find it, there will be a future, and your hope will not be cut off.”

10. Sarah Plain and Tall (1991)

A father, Jacob, has been struggling to raise his two children while maintaining his farm on his own and decides it’s time to find a new wife. Sarah sees his ad in the newspaper and moves from Maine to his Kansas farm. She deeply misses the Maine landscape and a drought turns the farm into a dismal mess. What started as a means to take care of his kids turns into a love formed through struggles. This is a thoughtful romantic movie that’s great for the whole family.

9. Hope Floats (1998)

Sandra Bullock brings Birdee Pruit to life as a soon-to-be divorced single mom after her best friend and husband announce their affair on national TV. She’s heartbroken and struggles to pick herself back up and help her daughter Bernice transition while moving back to the town where she grew up. Justin Matisse knew Birdee in high school and wants to rekindle an old spark, but Birdee pushes him away while grieving her failed marriage. Bernice is a daddy’s girl, which makes everything even more challenging. Eventually, Birdee begins trusting Justin with her heart.

8. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954)

This fun and clean romantic comedy will keep you laughing. It is set in 1850 when Adam brings home a wife and his seven younger brothers decide they want to get married as well. Millie, his wife, is shocked when she realizes how loud, dirty, sloppy and careless of all these big men are. Millie has her work cut out and whips the men into shape, but not before their brides are nearly scared away.

7. The Sound of Music (1965)

Ah, the classic Sound of Music! I grew up watching and loving this movie with Julie Andrews playing Maria. Navy captain Georg Von Trapp continues to hire governesses that cannot handle the job – that is until Maria comes along. She pays close attention to the poor behavior of the seven children, comes to realize how unhappy they are and tries to fix this. Maria crosses lines with the captain and is at a crossroads in her life where she is trying to listen and learn God’s will. She struggles with her growing fondness for the Captain and the two eventually form a strong bond that can’t be broken.

6. Love Comes Softly (2003)

Marty is a young, pregnant wife who moves out west with her husband, Aaron, for a better life. She is dealt a challenging hand because Aaron dies in a tragic accident soon after they begin settling down and she is left to make it on her own. Clark Davis lives nearby and offers her a place to stay in hopes that she will be a positive influence for his young daughter since his wife passed away. Nothing seems to be working, but slowly, Marty and Clark fall in love and his daughter Missie begins to accept her new mom.

5. Kate & Leopold (2001)

Have you wondered what it’s like to live in another century? What about marrying someone from a different time? Stuart Besser is obsessed with the idea of time travel and finds himself in New York in 1876! Leopold Alexis Elijah Walker Thomas Gareth Mountbatten, Duke of Albany, encounters Stuart and follows him into the 20th century where he is lost in the modernization of his town. He meets Kate, Stuart’s ex-friend and the two hit it off despite the huge cultural and time differences.

4. The Lake House (2006)

Dr. Kate Foster and architect Alex Wyler develop a unique relationship and find true love and companionship. They lived in the same house, have up-and-coming successful careers and laugh at each others’ quirks. The only problem is that Kate is living in 2008 and Alex is living in 2006. Kate had been living in the lake house and leaves a letter so the next tenant knows where to forward her mail. Alex lived in the home before her, but receives the letters and starts writing her back. This movie will make you smile as a couple develops a deep bond while being apart.

3. Ever After (1998)

Drew Berrymore stars in this Cinderella-style moving set in the 16th century. Danielle is forced to live as a servant for her stepmother Rodmilla after her father unexpectedly passes away. Rodmilla is jealous that her husband loved Danielle’s more than he loved her and punishes her for it. Rodmilla is pushing for Prince Harry to marry one of her daughters and Danielle could care less about who the prince chooses as the future queen. In a chance encounter, Danielle capture’s Henry’s attention and eventually the two find a way to be together, even though class seems to divide them. This romance movie is fun and full of laughter, besides offering a clean romance.

2. A Little Bit of Heaven (2011)

Everything in Marley Corbett’s life is going well with an amazing group of friends, a dream career and an energizing personality. She visits her doctor for what she assumes is a routine checkup and learns the devastating news that she’s terminally ill. Dr. Julian Goldstein is intrigued by Marley’s ability to make the most of every moment of every day, including while battling cancer. He goes against his colleague’s recommendations and can’t help but fall in love with Marley. Would you follow your heart even though you know you may wakeup to find your soul mate gone?

1. Tuck Everlasting (2002)

If you had the opportunity to become immortal, would you take it to live forever? This is exactly what 10-year old Winnie Foster has to contemplate when she accidentally finds a secret well of water that will prevent her from physically aging. She meets the Tucks and feels fondly of them, even though many in the surrounding area are extremely fearful of their inability to die. Although she is young, Winnie falls in love with Jesse Tuck who is 104 years old, but aged to 17 years of age. This adventurous movie has a cute storyline and a romantic spark between Jesse and Winnie. The Tucks are forced to move away for safety and offer Winnie a way to stay young forever when she turns 17 if she chooses Jesse as her soul mate.

 Conclusion

Each one of these movies gives a nugget of warmth and hope that so many people enduring pain can use. Thinking about never dying or how I would live if I knew the number of my days puts priorities into perspective. The Cinderella storyline continues to be re-invented with a new perspective and the idea of traveling to a different time makes us ponder about our own lives. Have you seen these movies? I invite you to send me your favorite scenes in each one!
