10 Awesome Songs That Glorify God

So many songs glorify God – that's one of the key aspects of Christian music. Upbeat group worship songs and slow prayerful ballads alike can remind us of the total glory and majesty of our great God. Here is a list of ten of my favorite songs that glorify our Creator:

10 – Forever by Kari Jobe

I haven’t listened to a lot of Kari Jobe’s songs yet, but when I heard this one, I immediately liked it. This is a song of just plain praise, which is what glorifies God the most.

Favorite lyrics: (the chorus) “Forever He is glorified, forever He is lifted high. Forever He is risen, He is alive, He is alive!”

9 – Raise Your Voices by Secret Garden

While the Norwegian neo-classical band Secret Garden doesn’t usually perform Christian music, they wrote and produced this beautiful hymn on a recent album. The song is done with a full choir and orchestra, which only adds to the power of the words.

Favorite lyrics: “Mountains tall and seas will thunder, one unceasing chorus sing. Heav’n and earth will sleep no longer, then the universe as one will sing. Raise your voices! Raise your voices! Praise to Him – the Living Word!”

8 – Glorious Day by Casting Crowns

Every song by Casting Crowns glorifies God to the fullest, in my opinion – that’s one of their strengths as a band. So for this post, I had to pick just one song.

Favorite lyrics: “Living, He loved me. Dying, He saved me. Buried, He carried my sins far away. Rising, He justified freely forever. One day He’s coming, oh glorious day, oh glorious day.” (Again, this is the chorus of the song)

7 – Coming Alive by Dustin Smith

Dustin Smith, a relative newcomer to Christian music as a performer (he’s been a songwriter for some time), sings this powerful upbeat song on his brand new album.

Favorite lyrics: “You unlocked our voices, now we are singing. Awakened our hearts and showed us how to dance on these chains and live in your freedom!”

6 – You Know Me by Eivør Pálsdóttir

Eivør has sung the occasional Scandinavian hymn on some of her albums, but this song is unique because it is a direct interpretation of Psalm 139. The slow tempo and acoustic arrangement beautifully represent the wonder of life as created by God.

Favorite lyrics: “Your love is in the marrow of my bones, in the ribbons of my DNA. I don’t have to pretend – you know who I am.”

5 – Blessed be Your Name by Rebecca St. James

This song has been performed by many artists, but Rebecca St. James’ version is my favorite because of the power and passion she puts into this song of praise.

Favorite lyrics: “Every blessing You pour out, I'll turn back to praise. When the darkness closes in, Lord, still I will say blessed be the name of the Lord!”

4 – Agnus Dei by Third Day

Another song that is done by many artists. I love the power and simplicity of this song, and since Third Day’s version is the first one I heard, I’ll go with it for this list. Any version of this worship song is worth listening to and singing, though, if you have a chance.

Favorite lyrics: “Holy are You, Lord God Almighty. Worthy is the Lamb, worthy is the Lamb!”

3 – The Wonder of the Cross by Vicky Beeching

Like so many Christian songs, this one glorifies God because of that most important act He ever did – sending his Son to die for us. Vicky Beeching’s voice in this powerful song glorifies God for this act of love and mercy.

Favorite lyrics: “May I never lose the wonder, the wonder of the cross. May I see it like the first time, standing as a sinner lost, undone by mercy and left speechless, watching wide-eyed at the cost.”

2 – Your Great Name by Natalie Grant

This song reminds us of everything that God can do, and everything that we can do in His name.

Favorite lyrics: “Lost are saved, find their way at the sound of Your great name. All condemned feel no shame at the sound of Your great name. Every fear has no place at the sound of Your great name. The enemy—he has to leave at the sound of Your great name.”

1 – I Am by Mark Schultz

God has so many names, because He is everything that we could ever want or need. In this song Mark Schultz gives glory to God for just a few of His awesome names.

Favorite lyrics: “I am the fount of living water, the risen Son of man, the healer of the broken. And when you cry I am your savior and redeemer.”

There are so many other songs I could add to this list. Praising God for His glory is what Christian music is all about. What are some of your favorite songs that glorify God?

A Prayer for Those Who Accept Christ This Christmas - Your Daily Prayer - December 24

The fact is, all around us, there are many people, for many reasons, who are searching for Christ this Christmas. We may not see the choir of angels around us, but the heavenly host still proclaims Christ’s birth. It occurs all around us.
